So who am I?
My name is George Simpson, better known by my internet alias of Sir Cobalt. I'm an English game designer specialising in level design. I'm also interested in narrative design and I dabble in the sectors of art, music, sound design and voice acting. I like to consider myself a jack of all trades. On this website, you will find detailed information on a few of my creative projects mostly relating to modding and game dev. You'll also be able to download playable files from here too.
I'm a very creative person but I often find my ambitions clash with reality. Lacking peers in my chosen fields throughout my life, I had to learn to do everything all by myself with little to no support from anyone else. This gives me a broad range of skills and a good deal of versatility, but my personal projects are often very scaled down to compensate. Even so, I generally prefer to work on smaller projects anyway. I believe the games industry has lost something in simple, small scale design. Despite my experience working solo, I'm quite open to collaborating on games or mods or anything similar.
In addition to game dev, I'm also into writing and worldbuilding. I have a great attention to detail and I care deeply about creating interesting and well thought out settings. My style is influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium with a focus on detailed history/backstories, character lineage and making a world that feels lived in. I am also greatly influenced by game design logic. By making levels in a game feel distinct from each other - adding different enemies, different colours/visuals etcetera - it makes the world feel richer and encourages the player to explore more. I like to apply a lot of these conventions to my writing endeavours and I've been told the results are quite good.
Outside of creative stuff, I'm also an avid gamer and I maintain a large collection of video games on PC and PlayStation consoles. I'm a big fan of classic PS2 games such as Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper, having grown up with them. All of these games have deeply influenced my approach to game design in some way as well as me generally. I'd love to get into tabletop gaming one day. I love listening to music and I have a broad range of tastes. So much so it encouraged me to pursue music production.
